![]() In addition, she was involved in planning commission decisions that protected the McKenzie River. During this time, she also assisted the League in the proper implementation of the state's new land use planning process by becoming a plaintiff in a lawsuit that resulted in clarification of the responsibilities of local government regarding annexation, land use, and urbanization. ![]() Sue served on the Lane County Planning Commission, the Santa Clara-River Road annexation advisory committee, and other public advisory groups. Sue exemplified the involved citizen: she was informed, served on public and nonprofit boards, and encouraged others to register, be informed, and vote. The experience enabled Sue to become a community leader in promoting the local implementation of the land use planning law. At the time she joined, the League was instrumental in advancing Oregon's model land use planning law, known as SB 100. That began a lifelong involvement with the organization. Shortly after returning to Eugene, Sue joined the League of Women Voters. The young family lived in Oakridge and then Florence, where son Alec was born in 1966, before settling permanently in Eugene in 1967. Sue and Jim's first child, Betsy, was born in 1962 at Fort Hood, TX. ![]() A short time later Jim was drafted and Sue returned to Sacramento to work for Governor Edmund (Pat) Brown. They were married in Sacramento on October 7, 1961, and began married life together in Eugene. Upon graduation, she worked as a summer reporter at the Lodi, CA, newspaper, while Jim began a nearly 40-year career with the (Eugene) Register-Guard. In 1961, she earned a bachelor's degree with honors in journalism. After overcoming resistance from faculty about whether the topic was newsworthy, she wrote her senior thesis on California farmworkers.Īt the University, she met Jim in journalism school. There, Sue took on leadership roles with student publications, including serving as the managing editor of the 1960-61 Oregana yearbook, and writer for the Daily Emerald. McClatchy High School and attended Sacramento City College before transferring to the University of Oregon. She is survived by Jim daughter Betsy Boyd (Marc Spence) of Eugene son Alec Boyd (Georgi Kelly) of San Francisco grandchildren Christopher Spence, Hunter Spence, and Keegan Boyd brother Stephen Hunter of Manhattan, NY and sister-in-law Millie Clarke of Medford, OR. Suzanne (Sue) was the wife of Howard James (Jim) Boyd, Jr. She was born in Sacramento, CA, on February 23, 1940, daughter of William and Marion Hunter. Suzanne Marion (Hunter) Boyd, 81, died on Jin Eugene, from a stroke caused by a heart infection.
